  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

(14.5% alcohol): Good full ruby. Sexy nose offers vibrant black fruits, bitter chocolate and violet, complicated by a saline minerality. Suave and energetic on the palate, with a pliant texture to the black fruit and bitter chocolate flavors. Not the last word in concentration but quite stylish. Finishes with smooth tannins and very good persistent minerality. In comparison with this wine, the 2007 version was a bit over the top.

  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 92

Fragrant floral, black licorice and fresh earth flavors are full bodied, with touches of bay leaf. Delicate at first, yet builds intensity and depth, ending with a long, full finish, where the tannins turn chewy.

The flagship offering from a 4-acre parcel, the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is a 650-cases, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon offering an excellent opaque ruby/purple color as well as abundant aromas of camphor, creme de cassis, subtle smoke and graphite characteristics. Full-bodied, rich, dense and concentrated with some tannins still to shed, it should drink nicely for 15 or more years.

  • Proprietor Jeff Smith has developed Hourglass Cabernet into one of the most anticipated releases each year since its debut in 1997. Winemaker (and Jeff's fellow band mate) Bob Foley gets the most out of this vineyard, named for its location at the narrowest point of the Napa Valley, just north of St. Helena. Production is consistently under 1000 cases.
