(cabernet sauvignon with 29% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot; 15.3% alcohol): Good ruby-red. Sexy aromas of crushed black raspberry, licorice pastille and smoked meat, lifted by a floral nuance. Big, ripe and highly concentrated, showing very good energy to the powerful, slightly aggressive black raspberry flavor. Almost too powerful today, with the strong tannins showing a faint dry edge. This seems to be shutting down in the bottle and is in an awkward stage today.

Another stylish Futo Cabernet. Complex, ripe and alluring aromatics lead to a tight, firm, vivid mix of dark berry character, with blackberry, wild raspberry and currant. Medium- to full-bodied and remarkably elegant and refined on the palate. There's sufficient tannins, yet the acidity is crisp and refreshing. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

The 2008 Futo is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, which is slightly modified from the barrel sample I tasted last year. It reveals aromas of blueberries, raspberries, crushed rocks, graphite, black currants and forest floor. The complex aromatics are followed by a wine displaying wonderful sweetness, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and admirable depth and power as well as finesse. This deep, promising 2008 is already concentrated and approachable. It should drink well for 15-20 years.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
