Bright, deep ruby-red. Deeper and riper on the nose than the Napa Valley bottling, showing brooding aromas of blackberry, cassis, tar, minerals and licorice. Rich and deep but extremely backward and youthfully imploded; a step beyond the Napa bottling in texture and depth, not to mention inner-mouth perfume. This really saturates the palate without leaving any impression of weight. Most impressive today on the subtle, rising, slowly expanding finish, which features big, rich, serious tannins and outstanding energy. There's nothing exotic about the Dunn 2008s, which perfectly capture the energy of this vintage. Should be long-lived.

Firm, rich and concentrated, this offers tight tannins enriched by loamy earth. Dried currant, spice, floral and underbrush flavors impart a savory profile. Should benefit from cellaring.

Randy Dunn's 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain has always bean a real beast. The product of a year in which a spring frost decimated yields, the 2008 boasts massive fruit and overall intensity to the point the tannins are nearly buried. The flavors remain incredibly primary, with very little in the way of aromatic development, but, at the same time, I am happy to report readers will not have to wait another decade-plus to enjoy the 2008, as I had originally thought. Little by little Dunn's 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is coming together.

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain takes things to another level, as hard as it may seem to believe. This was another difficult vintage for Dunn. Yields were down a full 50%. In exchange, nature rewarded Dunn with the fruit to make an epic wine that could very well turn out to be a modern-day legend. The 2008 is a huge, towering wine packed with dark fruit, licorice, tar, asphalt and licorice. Layers of perfume are woven throughout this majestic effort. The 2008 should only be purchased by the very patient, but it is a legendary wine in the making. Anticipated maturity: 2028-2043.

A lovely cali cab but still, a cali cab instead of a burg.

I am basing my overall score on day 3 after being open but preserved. At the onset, this was the most curious tasting cabernet I have ever consumed. If you had put a bag over it and asked me to guess its origin, I would have said Italy. Its taste is more akin to a brunello or a Chiante Riserva. Very closed at the beginning and opened up and improved dramatically throughout the evening. My initial thought was this wine was either horrible or horribly young. 85pts out of the bottle. On Day 3, I poured a glass and oh what a difference. This is clearly a wine that needs to be open for a while before consumption. It was beautifully elegant and balanced. It now tasted like a California cab of a high caliber.

Dunn Vineyards is located east of St. Helena in the town of Angwin on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley. In 1972 Randy and Lori purchased the original vineyard property. The winery was established in 1979, with the first harvest of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. In 1981, the first release offered consumers 660 cases of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Howell Mountain vineyards. In 1982, Dunn also released their first Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Currently Dunn Vineyards produces around 5000 cases of extremely age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon.
