Bright ruby. A heady bouquet displays fresh red berries, sandalwood, dried flowers and a hint of baking spices. Creamy in texture, with lively acidity lifting sweet red and dark berry and candied rose flavors. Becomes sappier with air and finishes with very good clarity and lingering spiciness. Avril thinks this wine will surprise people with its ability to age.

Dark, inviting and very alluring, with captivating black tea, charred mesquite and kirsch aromas and flavors allied to a remarkably silky mouthfeel. Superlong, with mineral, violet, pepper and additional crushed cherry and plum fruit notes all gliding through the finish. Best from 2011 through 2027. 5,500 cases made.

Very zesty - drier than most - and I suspect some might even miss it as a Chƒteauneuf if tasted blind at this stage! Evolved and transparent. Alcohol on the very end but not that dense in the lead up to it. Transparent.

Vincent Avril fashioned one of the finest 2008 Chateauneuf du Papes of the appellation. Made from a classic blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and the rest an assortment of permitted varietals, it exhibits a dark color as well as a bouquet of lavender, kirsch, licorice, loamy balsamic notes and hints of roasted meats and herbs. Evolved by this estate's standards, it is an elegant effort with surprising density and richness. I actually prefer it to the 2005 (which was The Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year).

Outstanding for the vintage. Classic aromas of herbs de provence, currants, cassis, scorched earth and forest floor. Great lenght, silky tannins! The wine's finish is very persistent and easily 45 seconds.

Clos des Papes is indisputably one of the reference points for premium Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Owned by the Avril family, who has been making wine in Chateauneuf-du-Pape since the beginning of the 18th century, this property maintains its distinction of premier status not only because of its exceptional product, but also due to the generosity and graciousness of its owners - Paul (father), Vincent (son) and Madame Avril.

The wine is a majority Grenache with Mourvedre and Syrah, but the Avrils also have some plantings of Muscardin, Counoise and Vaccarese that they do not hesitate to use to enhance the blend. Sourced from 18 separate parcels (one of which was part of the old walled-in papal vineyard, hence the name) it gains its unique character from some sandy soils in the west and southeast and the more limestone/clay earth of the rocky north and northeast. There is no "Reserve," per se, as the Avril sell off in bulk to negociants what they do not feel is worthy to include in their one and only top blend.
