($56) Wild, explosive aromas of raspberry, fresh flowers, smoky minerals and Asian spices. High-pitched and sappy, with brisk minerality lifting pure red fruit and floral flavors. A dense, penetrating essence of red fruit, with terrific definition and uncanny energy. Finishes with firm but silky tannins and noteworthy power, but the overall impression is of finesse. This is gorgeous.

No such issues with restraint are noticeable with the 2008 Pinot Noir Melville. Coming from clay/loamy soils in a very cold site planted with the Burgundian Dijon clones, this dark ruby/purple-tinged Pinot Noir (14.5% alcohol) has the classic raspberry and blueberry notes with some sweet black cherry and subtle earth in the background. It is probably the most front end-loaded of the B-C Pinot Noirs, with tremendous elegance, an attractive, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, and a seductive, lush finish. Drink it over the next decade.

Go Cargassachi if you're going Brewer-Clifton. Or go Kosta Browne and rock out with your c*** out...

Brewer-Clifton produces vineyard designated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Santa Rita Hills appellation in Santa Barbara. Greg Brewer and Steve Clifton started the winery in the early 1990s with the aim to capture the vineyards' essence in the bottle. The Santa Rita Hills' long growing seasons and diversity of marine-based soils give the wines great purity and precision. Steve also has his own label called Palmina that focuses on Italian varieties. Greg Brewer also has his own Diatom label and is the winemaker at Melville Winery.
