2008 Big Basin Syrah Coastview Vineyard
UNITED STATES / CALIFORNIA / MONTEREY
International Wine Cellar | Rating: 93
Deep violet color. A sexy, complex bouquet shows an array of black and blue fruits, sandalwood, licorice and candied violet. Sweet, palate-staining blueberry and cherry-cola flavors are lifted by gentle acidity and show a seamless texture. Ripe and fleshy but vibrant, with excellent finishing clarity and resonating spiciness. This wine's blend of power and energy is impressive.Author: Josh RaynoldsIssue: November/December 2011
Big Basin is sited on a 19th century vineyard plot that Bradley Brown discovered when he was surveying the property. He turned up redwood stakes arranged in a grid and found a grapevine growing into a tree. Once he realized the potential, he enlisted John Alban to recommend the best variety for the soils and exposure. The answer was Syrah. The Estate vineyard - Rattlesnake Rock - provides the Santa Cruz Mountain Syrah, and additional fruit is sourced from the highly-regarded Fairview Ranch in the Santa Lucia Highlands. A pinot is crafted from Banciforte Ridge, a cool climate Santa Cruz Mountain site. After a few very successful vintages, Big Basin is no longer "a quiet little secret." Yields are now "up" to 1.5 tons per acre.
