Fragrant with cedary spice. Silky texture, elegant, red-fruited and already showing finesse. (JH)

Red-ruby. Perfumed aromas of redcurrant, licorice, chocolate, flowers and baking spices. Classic taut claret, showing insidious intensity without weight. Juicy, nicely delineated flavors of redcurrant, black cherry, pepper and herbs. Finishes vibrant and persistent, with ripe, dusty tannins and a lingering note of redcurrant.

  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 89

This ageworthy, elegant, well-made Beychevelle displays copious red and black cherry fruit notes intertwined with dusty, loamy soil and oak undertones, decent acidity, moderate tannin and impressive intensity as well as length. Give it 1-3 years of cellaring and enjoy it over the next 15-18 years.

  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 90

This has a slightly brawny edge, but feels like it's filling out quickly, with lush, dark fig sauce, black licorice snap and graphite notes taking on more depth as it airs in the glass. Extra black tea and anise hints flash on the finish. Drink now through 2019. 20,833 cases made.

Opaque ruby red. Aroma of wet stone, smoke, raw venison, cassis, blackberry, leather, nutmeg, pine sap and violets. Subtle and round in the mouth, silky tannin, medium bodied, balanced acidity and dark berry fruit character. Dry and slightly astringent towards the back end. Medium- length finishing with a touch of sweet fruit that is quickly washed away.

Built in magnificent 18th century Louis XV style, Chateau Beychevelle sits in the St. Julien district of the Medoc, with neighbors including Chateau Gloria and Chateau St. Pierre. The name Beychevelle was derived from the expression "Baisse-Vaille" meaning "lower sails". This act was a symbol of respect by the French Navy to the Duc d'Eperon, who was Admiral of France at the time and 16th century owner of the estate. The chateau is a 4eme Cru Classe, and produces a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. At its best, the wine is known for its rich, concentrated fruit that ages with ease. In addition to its flagship wine, the estate also makes a second label called Amiral de Beychevelle and an AC Haut Medoc production called Brulieres de Beychevelles.
