($34) Deep medium ruby. Black cherry, dark chocolate and minerals on the fresh nose; distinctly rocky. Then dense but juicy and light on its feet, with very good nerve and delineation of flavor. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and very good aromatic persistence.

The 2007 Zinfandel Tofanelli Vineyard is a sexy wine offering loads of strawberry and black cherry fruit along with hints of loamy soil, pepper, and spice. Round and full-bodied, it is ideal for drinking over the next 5-6 years.

One of three Turleys we opened at dinner last night. This one was the favorite of the three. Cedar and berries (raspberry & blackberry) on the nose. Jammy on the palette but not overpowering. Some spices evident too. More complex than the 2006 Dusi opened after this one. Alcohol, while high, was not as noticeable.

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.
