  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 90

($25) Good bright red-ruby color. Lively aromas of black fruits, licorice and bitter chocolate. Creamy and pliant in the middle palate, with nicely concentrated sweet berry flavors. Not yet especially complex but shows a bit more clarity and concentration than the young-vines version. Finishes with very good definition and lift.

Another generic blend made from lots culled from the single vineyard Zinfandels is the 2007 Zinfandel Old Vines. It is a softer, slightly fuller offering than the Juvenile, with blacker fruits, and notes of damp earth, plums, and pepper. Ripe and fleshy, it is best consumed over the next 3-5 years.

  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 86

Dense and rather overripe, showing aromas of dried cherry and cracked pepper, with briary blueberry, sage and licorice flavors that finish with rustic tannins.

Not even close to it's end. Rugged, chewy bramble and black berry with a nose you won't forget. You wish you had more.

Yet another Turley, basically compare favorably to everything they make. Drunk a little young but at this alcohol content didn't want to let it go too long (and making space for incoming allocation :-) ).

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.
