  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 94

(bottled in magnums; from the oldest part of the vineyard): Good dark red. Deep, inviting aromas of chocolate, earth, leather and menthol complicated by minerals. Sweet, dense and highly concentrated, showing complex flavors of dark fruits, truffle, earth, minerals and mocha. Lovely energy here: this tastes younger than its age even if the nose suggests a maturing wine. Most impressive on the slowly building, vibrant back end, whose persistent sweetness makes the Gallina Riserva seem almost dry by comparison.

Displays intense aromas of plum skin, orange peel and rosebud. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Balanced, with a lovely texture. 1,290 cases made.

The 2004 Barbaresco Starderi is a knock-out effort. A dark, brooding wine it reveals an array of dark cherries, spices, tar and smoke in a powerful, sinewy style. With each passing moment, it seemingly turns more and more classic in the glass, with only the super-ripe fruit serving as a reminder that this is a more contemporary wine. The balance and use of oak are both masterful. It is easily the finest wine Giorgio Rivetti has ever made, and is also the first wine in the estate's history that can truly challenge for a spot in the top echelon of the zone.

  • Founded in 1977 by Lidia and Pin Rivetti, La Spinetta has grown from a small Piedmont producer of Moscato into a extensive operation which now also crafts Barbera, Barbaresco, and Barolo. Along with their original holdings in Piedmont, La Spinetta has also expanded into Tuscany, where they produce Sangiovese, Vermentino, and other native Tuscan varieties. La Spinetta is run by Pin's three sons - Carlo, Bruno, and Giorgio. As the head of production, Giorgio is also the face of the company. However, all three brothers work together on the business with the same ultimate goal - producing quality wine above everything else. Giorgio's wines are both approachable and designed to be enjoyed with food, and all of the wines are produced from 100% estate grown fruit. As validation of his innovation and success, Giorgio's debut Barolo, the 2000 Campe della Spinetta, earned a 98-point score from Wine Spectator.
