Powerful but light on its feet, offering sweet red fruit flavors and notes of licorice and rose pastille. More clenched than the Pictures today, with impressive latent power and a tangy, mineral-driven finish.

    This is shipping next April. This is 100% from Eleven Confessions Vineyard. This has spent 34 months in barrel and never racked. Full and beautiful with sliced plums and berries. Super velvety tannins. Soft too. Tight and in reserve. Phenomenal depth of fruit. This is so deep. I love it. Just a baby. A wine you really have to get to know. You have to feel it. Reminds me of the 1989 Rayas. The evolution will be amazing for decades to come.

    This wine, which is scheduled to be released in several months, is 88% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 2% Viognier (36% whole clusters utilized), all from the 11 Confessions Vineyard. A whopper at 15.6% alcohol, this is the extended barrel-aged Grenache, spending 32 months in a combination of small oak casks as well as larger demi-muids. Absolutely magnificent, with incredible uplifted aromatics and great raspberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with blackberry, camphor, licorice and lavender, this wine is full-bodied, with super purity and a huge, massive mouthfeel as well as stunning texture and length. How Krankl was able to combine almost unbridled power with such extraordinary purity, definition and elegance is mind-boggling. This wine should drink well for at least 15+ years.

    Wow! One of my fav SQN's ever! Delicious from a pop and pour. Tons of upfront blue fruits, bacon fat, smoke and a big mouthfeel. Great stuff!

Manfred Krankl, an Austrian immigrant and Los Angeles restaurateur turned winemaker, is a reclusive and maniacally hard-working proprietor. His back-alley Ventura winery, dubbed the "garage d'or," has been described as "a junkyard (or the first or second level of hell)" and compared to a set from the movie "Mad Max" by Robert Parker. A true believer in radical viticulture, Krankl has worked with excessively low yields and maintains his winery and vineyards with meticulous attention to detail.

Since the debut "Queen of Spades" in 1994, original artwork and increasingly creative wordplay has adorned the label of each SQN wine. The wine itself has become a benchmark for Rhone varieties not just in California, but in the world. With 100-point scores in double digits, Robert Parker raves, "...the Grenache is the finest in the New World, the Syrah begs to be compared with the greatest of France, California, and Australia, and the white wine blends assembled by Manfred Krankl are as sumptuous and complex as the world's finest Chardonnays..." California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.

Grenache is a thick-skinned, late-ripening variety that requires a warm or hot climate to grow. Its tolerance for drought conditions make it an ideal match for the water-starved regions of Spain, the Southern Rhône, and Australia. It is rarely made as a varietal wine, and usually produces full-bodied blends that are high in alcohol and low in acidity with soft tannins and aromas of cherry, rhubarb, raspberry, cinnamon, tobacco, and thyme. These wines are typically matured in large old oak vessels so as not to overwhelm the delicate fruit flavors of Grenache.

Grenache is the most widely planted variety in the Southern Rhône, and the best-quality blends come from Châteauneuf-du-Pape where the wines are full-bodied with rich texture and concentrated spicy red fruit. Look to producers such as Château de Beaucastel, Clos des Papes, or Domaine du Pegau for the best expressions of these wines.

In Spain, this variety is referred to as “Garnacha” and is an important blending partner of Carignan in the region of Priorat, where low-yielding old vines enable the production of intense, complex, full-bodied, wines with high tannin, fresh black fruit, and toasty oak. It is also an important contribution to blends in Rioja, where it contributes perfume, body, and alcohol to Tempranillo. Vega Sicilia and Bodegas R. Lopez de Heredia create some of the best expressions of these Spanish styles.

In the New World, high-quality Grenache-based blends are found in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale regions of Australia, where old bush vines yield low volumes of highly concentrated grapes. Wines from top-quality producers such as Torbreck are robust, with intense flavors of ripe red berry and peppery spice. California producers such as Sine Qua Non are also making world-renowned wines from Grenache.

Grenache’s spice-forward flavor profile makes it a great pairing option for spiced and herb-heavy dishes, including roasted and spiced vegetables, braised pork, turkey breast, and a range of ethnic foods. However, it is important to note that the high alcohol in Grenache can magnify the heat of piquant dishes, and vice versa.
