45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 10% Sangiovese, 12 months in mix of French and US oak. 10% new oak only. Better vintage than 2006.More deeply coloured and black-fruited than the Difese. Restrained nose. Delicate dark cassis. Just a very slight leafiness. That same mouthwatering freshness as the Difese but a little more fleshy and more concentration. With time in glass, more fragrant. Sweetness of Merlot flesh but such lovely balance and more noticeable minerality. Tannins are polished and fine and dry. (JH)

Sweet blackberry character, with hints of blueberry and black licorice. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a fresh herb and berry aftertaste. Very tannic. Needs time. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best after 2011. 15,000 cases made.

The 2007 Guidalberto is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, with most of the fruit coming from a property adjacent to the vineyards used for Sassicaia. About 20% of the wine consists of declassified barrels of Sassicaia. The 2007 Guidalberto is another sexy, ripe offering from Tenuta San Guido. The wine reveals gorgeous inner perfume and endless layers of fruit that coat the palate all the way through to the long finish. The 2007 is not likely to be as long-lived as the 2006, but I doubt that will be much of a problem as these bottles are likely to be long gone by the time ageability becomes an issue. Readers will have a very hard time keeping their hands off this irresistible, sensual, opulent wine. The 2007 is another blockbuster Guidalberto!

Red tinged with purple. Defined by its tart, cranberry-driven acidity, and time-developed fruit. Mellowed tannins.

This is a great wine for Thanksgiving or Christmas Turkey dinners. The tannins have calmed down since the WS rating. Full bodied, but will not overpower the many flavors with the dinner.

Just south of Livorno, Tuscany, lies the Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC, and the Tenuta San Guido estate, where Sassicia is produced. The estate was originally owned by Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta, and has been managed since WWII by his son, Niccolo. A true pioneer in the Italian wine industry, his experimenting with the introduction of non-native varieties to Italy, resulted in the world-famous Sassicaia. In Italian, Sassicaia means "the place of many stones" and is used as the proprietary name for the estate's Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The vines of the Sassicaia vineyard were originally planted with cuttings from the prestigious Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. The wines of Sassicaia were so instrumental in creating the "Super-Tuscan" sensation that 1994, the Italian government granted Sassicaia its own DOC status in a sub-zone of the Bolgheri DOC. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats, and the wines are then aged in French oak barrique for 18 to 24 months prior to release. Sassicaia produces a second label called Guidalberto and recently released a third wine, Le Difese, that is virtually unavailable in the U.S.
