    ($83; 74% cabernet sauvignon, 16% cabernet franc, and 5% each petit verdot and merlot) Bright red-ruby. Captivating, complex nose features currant, strawberry, coffee and graphite, along with a floral topnote; showing its cabernet franc component today. Then suave, sweet, creamy and full in the middle, with piquant spicy, peppery, herbal complexity giving this a Bordeaux-like quality. Really spreads out to saturate the mouth. The very long finish features glossy tannins. I loved the combination of strong fruit and refined texture. These vines were planted between 1997 and 2002 but were farmed for the first time in 2007 by Paul Champoux (much of the vineyard is planted at a very dense 3-by- 6 feet).

    The 2007 Palengat Proprietary Red Wine is made up of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc, with the balance Merlot and Petit Verdot. Deep purple in color, it delivers a captivating nose of olives, herbs, Asian spices, blackberry, and plum. Medium to full-bodied and elegant on the palate, it has outstanding volume and concentration, an opulent texture, and a suave personality. Already complex, it will continue to evolve with another 5-7 years of cellaring.

  • No Washington winery commands more attention from wine collectors than Quilceda Creek, with repeated 100-point scores and subsequent appreciating bottle value. Since 1978, the Alex Golitzin and his son Paul have been lauded for their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, which is elevated by the Bordelais practice of declassification of up to one third of production into a second label each year. The fruit for their 4,000-case production is sourced from the finest vineyards on the far side of the Cascade Mountains, and the Golitzins are meticulous in their oversight of the viticultural practices. Driven to produce the greatest wine possible, Alex and Paul "know what they want in a wine and what to do to get it."

    In a state most often associated with rain and apples, vineyards occupy more land each year. Nearly all of this vineyard expansion has taken place in the eastern part of the state, where arid, almost desert-like conditions prevail. Winters are harsh and frost is always a threat, but such conditions, along with sandy soils, have allowed most Washington vines to grow on their own rootstocks—a rarity among wine regions throughout the world.
