  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 88

($35) Deep red. Exotically perfumed bouquet of kirsch, incense, licorice and smoked meat. Nicely concentrated dark fruit flavors are complemented by smoky herbal and floral qualities and pick up a gamey quality with air. Pretty complex right now, with a distinctly sauvage character and good finishing grip.

A sleeper of the vintage, the 2007 Pignan Chateauneuf du Pape's chocolate, black raspberry, and cherry characteristics compete with notions of licorice and lavender. Possessing excellent fruit intensity, full-bodied power, and remarkable opulence, this 100% Grenache cuvee may be the finest Pignan made since the 1990.

Grenache Noir 64%, Syrah 13%, MourvŠdre 12%, mixed 5%, with 20% aged in barrique. Fr‚d‚ric Charvin, in Chƒteauneuf-du-Pape itself, has 15 ha and is bottling a bigger and bigger proportion of what he grows himself rather than selling off in bulk.Low-key nose. A little stringy with marked acidity. Fine, and there's nothing wrong with this, but not one of the most luscious or expressive 2007s. Very much as though the best stuff has been creamed off for the special cuv‚e.

  • This legendary cellar grew to its fame through the efforts of the late Jacques Reynaud and is now run by his nephew, Emmanuel. The reds are mainly Grenache and reveal a solid concentration that reacts to aging by extracting layer upon layer of subtle texture and complexity. Most people tend to rave about the Rayas, but in our estimation, the Pignan (which is made up of the cuvees that didn't make the Rayas cut) is a terrific second wine that is such an extraordinary value that it should be purchased in case quantities. Often this unassuming wine can eclipse many a top Chateauneuf.
