($52) Vivid red. Intensely spicy aromas of black raspberry, cherry skin, anise and white pepper. Lush and sweet, with deep, focused red and dark berry flavors, silky texture and a late kick of brown spices. I really like this wine's energy and finishing clarity.

A red cherry and pinot-liqueur nose trimmed in light spice and menthol notes is followed by supple and fruit-forward flavors that possess good mid-palate focus and fat that buffers the moderately firm structural elements on the sappy and discreetly warm finish. There is also a curious taste of something that vaguely resembles creosote, which is not so much unpleasant as it's simply odd.

Opened and decanted for thirty minutes. Initially the wine was all dark cherry and heat, heat on the nose, heat on the front palate, side palate, back. However after another forty-five minutes in the decanter this wine began to show the pedigree of the vintage and the winemaker. Expressed loads of dark, ripe cherry with sassafras, forest root and dark spices. There is just, I mean just, some toastiness on the edges. Along the sides of the mid-palate there is some really nice vanilla bean with caramel pushing it toward the finish which is all fig and cola. All together after the length of the decant and time in the glass this wine proved to be fairly even handed with lots of really great spice; balanced in its flavor profile and well put together. If the alcohol could be cut by just a bit it would really be a knock out.

The aroma of this dark red Pinot smells of the most luscious, ripe, red cherries, and is absolutely intoxicating. On the palate, some time is still needed to bring out the succulent cherry fruit flavor, which is peppered with Asian spices and a bit of smoky oak.

Kosta-Browne started its supersonic trek to celebrity status in 1997, when pals Dan Kosta and Michael Browne pooled their restaurant tips and purchased a half ton of Pinot Noir, a manual crusher-de-stemmer and a used barrel. Adding the business and investment-savy Chris Costello gave Kosta Browne the requisite resources to expand into the Pinot force they are today. Fruit is sourced from top-notch vineyards in the Russian River, Sonoma Coast, and Santa Lucia Highlands. Their philosophy is to make Pinots that express intense flavor and the "sweet spot" of their respective vineyards. In addition to their vineyard-designate wines, Kosta Browne also produces two blends: one from the Sonoma Coast and the other from Russian River.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
