($135; 46% each cabernet sauvignon and merlot, 6% cab franc and 2% petit verdot) Bright deep ruby. Deep aromas of blackberry, graphite and violet. Sweet, rich and concentrated, with a layered, chocolatey ripeness to the black fruit, mineral and licorice flavors. Finishes with broad, dusty tannins and terrific length.

Reminiscent of Bordeaux with its loamy earthiness, texture and structure, this is rich and full-bodied, with mouthcoating tannins yet also plenty of herb- and currant-laced mineral and graphite flavors that are intense and concentrated. Needs time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

The 2007 Estate Cuvee State Lane Vineyard (a 750-case blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) boasts an inky/plum/purple color as well as a complex bouquet of melted licorice, chocolate, creme de cassis, mocha, and sweet forest floor aromas. Full-bodied and layered with exquisite purity, texture, and length, this large-scaled offering reveals a supple texture along with 20-25 years of drinkability. It is a seductive yet extraordinarily complex wine that should prove to be a future super-star.

Barrel Sample. Opaque purple in the glass, this blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petite Verdot has a lovely nose of candied violets and bright, black cherry aromas. In the mouth it skitters across the palate with satin-like smoothness, bulging with soft, rich tannins that open to reveal flavors of cassis, pencil lead, and perfectly ripe black cherry. Rich, dark chocolate flavors emerge in the languorous finish. Outstanding and utterly compelling.

The historic State Lane Vineyard, in the heart of the Napa Valley, was first leased by Beringer Estates in 1972 and was used to launch Beringer's famous Private Reserve Cabernet. The Kapcsandys purchased the property in May, 2000 and in 2001 teamed up with legendary winemaker Helen Turley and her viticulturist husband John Wetlaufer. After careful research, they discovered a unique vineyard with multiple micro-geological conditions and decided to redevelop the vineyard for its utmost potential and produce world-class red wines under the Kapcsandy label. The first two vintages - 2003 and 2004 - were produced by Helen Turley. For 2005 Rob Lawson, the winemaker at Napa Wine Company for the past 16 years, was brought aboard and in 2007, Denis Malbec became the sole winemaking consultant.
