($250) Full ruby. Plum liqueur and chocolate on the nose. Supple on entry, then quite backward in the middle, showing a restrained sweetness and a distinctly savory character. Finishes with substantial toothcoating tannins. Essentially suave wine but in need of at least five or six years of cellaring.

  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 96

A stylish, elegant youngster, with vivid mocha-covered raspberry, blackberry, red and black licorice flavors. Full-bodied and notably complex, tight and focused, ending with a persistent beam of flavors and firm tannins, with a dash of tobacco and cedar.

The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard boasts a stunningly pure nose of blueberries and blackberries with notions of toast and flowers in the background. Thefloral nature of the fruit only adds to the wine's complexity. Full-bodied but civilized, this wine's tannins can be borderline rustic, but that's not an issue with this glorious, full-bodied, opulent 2007 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wow! This was some great wine. Drank with chateaubriand at Bowery Meat Co. Perfect wine for the dish... heck nearly perfect wine! Tannins are soft and sweet now, still plenty of fruit, but great balance. Nose and flavor profile remind me a lot of Harlan Estate with that hint of cedar/caramel (is that the Oakville terroir speaking to me? They are on opposite sides of the valley, I think). Sorry this was my last bottle - this was the best wine I've had in a long time.

Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.
