($80) Opaque ruby. Spicy raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by garrigue and Asian spices. Sweet, focused red fruit flavors are given spine by zesty minerality and pick up an exotic floral quality with air. Expands nicely on the finish, leaving behind sweet lavender pastille and raspberry notes.

Grenache Noir 100% from a cool terroir. Some barriques. Organic.Hint of mousiness on the nose. Very sweet black cherries and lots of (alcoholic) appeal. Reasonably fine tannins though they will take time to resolve. Blockbuster.

Plush and fleshy, with crushed plum, dark currant and boysenberry notes backed by alluring sweet spice, licorice root and espresso hints. Muscular but well-rounded on the lengthy finish, with the spice notes flittering on.

Showing a smidge of worrisome volatile acidity, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin nevertheless has off-the-hook levels of richness and depth. Spring flowers, blackberry, cassis, licorice, violets and white pepper are all present here, and it's a massive wine on the palate, with big fruit, a voluptuous texture and a great finish. After this tasting, I pulled a bottle from my cellar (purchased on release), and it was firing on all cylinders, with not a hint of VA, so this appears to be an isolated issue.

Up until 1973, patriarch and proprietor Aime Sabon sold the entire production of this estate to cooperatives. In 1991, his son Christophe took over the running of the Domaine La Janasse, named after a family camp in Courthezon. The grapes that go into the "Cuvee Chaupin" come from a parcel of vines planted in 1912 and produce the pure, graceful, yet opulent and firmly structured wines for which the domaine has become renowned. Roughly a quarter of these wines are AOC Chateauneuf du Pape.
