  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 93

($55) Pale golden yellow. Subdued aromas of passion fruit, lime oil and wild herbs. The sweet tropical fruit flavors are highlighted by a refreshing gingery acidity that keeps the palate light in spite of the wine's density. Elegant but also quite full-bodied, this auslese finishes on spice and slate.

Gorgeous aromas and flavors of tropical fruit salad stay vivid and etched across the finish thanks to the vibrant structure. Ethereal yet intense, with a snappy finish that makes you want more.

Yeasty, fermentative notes to some extent shroud the true aromas of the Prums' 2007 Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Auslese, which with patience reveals high-toned herbal essences, fresh lime, and gardenia. In the mouth this is intensely saline and lime-fruited, making for a refreshing and enervating character one seldom finds at Auslese level, and that offers dynamic counterpoint to the wine's wafting floral notes and its rich flavors of cherry preserve and honey. As Manfred Prum is the first to point out, this Auslese is more than a little Saar-like. It also finishes straight and penetrating as an arrow, with suggestions of peat, salt, and wet stone adding a fascinating mineral dimension.

  • Created in 1911 by a split of family vineyards, this estate has built its stellar reputation on the strength of its long-lived Rieslings. First under the direction of Johann Josef Prum, and followed by subsequent generations, the winery is now maintained by Dr. Manfred Prum. The 33 acres of estate vineyards on the steep, rocky slopes of the middle Mosel produce 13,000 cases annually, running the full spectrum of the Pradikat. These vineyards boast 70% original rootstock, and low-yielding old vines. The resulting wines are known for their full-flavored fruit, spiciness, and slow development, which greatly rewards patient cellaring.
