(100% sangiovese; aged for 18 months in barriques, one-third new and 5% American oak; 14.5 % alcohol) Deep red. Aromatic nose of ripe red cherry, menthol and underbrush, with an intriguing note of peach. Sweet, supple and dense, with ripe flavors of dark plum, almond, underbrush and tomato paste. Finishes long and smooth, with a strong coffee nuance. This reminded me a little of syrah!

Silky and caressing, with pretty berry and floral aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins. There's a beautiful density and finesse to this.

The 2007 Cepparello comes across as rich, round and totally seductive in this tasting. Stylistically, it shares many attributes with the 1990 and 1997, although in my view it is more elegant than those wines. There is an immediacy about the 2007 that is highly appealing, and which will make the wine accessible relatively early. Layers of fruit build beautifully to an exciting crescendo of aromas and flavors. This is an undeniably sexy Cepparello.

Still young, but quite drinkable. A good example of Tuscany, very nice with food. I think this will gain character over time.

The estate is run by Paolo de Marchi, who has been turning out significant and stunning wines for years. The "Cepparello" is dense and intense, but has a subtle finesse that frames lovely, dense, black fruit purity. In addition to its classic Sangiovese-based wines, Isole e Olena also produces Vin Santo, "L'Eremo" Syrah, as well as several new world varieties under the Collezione de Marchi label.

The rolling hills of Tuscany are home to ancient vines that grew wild long before modern times. Sangiovese is the variety of the region's best-known wines, Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti. In recent years, “Super Tuscans"—blends including non-native Bordeaux varieties—have gained in popularity and acclaim. The region's Mediterranean climate, with its warmer average temperatures, provides ideal conditions for the development of rich, structured, and age-worthy wines.
