(tasted from barrel; the wine was scheduled to be racked the week after my visit) Restrained nose hints at candied citrus peel, flowers, vanilla and smoky lees. On the palate, lovely sweetness is perfectly buffered by ripe acidity, but this is very backward and minerally wine-more Perrieres-like than most other growers' Perrieres. Taut and uncompromising, and less showy than the Genevrieres.

Sweet and creamy, more opulent and fuller in the mouth than the GenevriŠres. Almost exotic with lemon peel on the finish - a zesty contrast to the richness in the mouth. Slightly salty at the very end. (JH)

This have evolved beautifully since my last review with its ultra-pure aromas of peach, apricot, pear and spiced white peach leading to ripe, concentrated and superbly precise flavors that display plenty of mid-palate fat and ample minerality that this part of Charmes always seems to impart to the wines and overall, this is a stunningly harmonious wine of finesse that delivers breathtaking length. This may not be Lafon's best Charmes ever but it is a seriously, seriously impressive effort that is no where near ready.

Initially little taste. Then gradually builds to a full body. Hint of oak. Nice acidity. Long finish. Very well balanced.

Dominique Lafon has an unwavering loyalty to traditional winemaking, but the flexibility to know when and where progressive techniques are warranted. The vineyards are biodynamic, and wines are barrel fermented, and bottled nearly two years after harvest. Comtes Lafon has one of the deepest, coldest cellars in Burgundy and this has a most positive effect upon the stellar quality of the wines, as it allows for very lengthy, complete fermentations and aging. The result is wines that are made to last and enjoy over decades. As Clive Coates so succinctly states, "[this is] one of the few indisputably three-star white wine estates in Burgundy." Lafon specializes in Premier Cru Meursault and Volnay Pinot Noir.
