(tasted from cuve Good medium red. Lovely lift and purity to the aromas of cassis, bitter chocolate and violet. Supple, sweet and delicious, with a juicy ripeness to the sappy dark chocolate and mineral flavors. Very nicely integrated acidity gives this a weightless feeling. Finishes with sweet tannins and very good mineral lift. A classic Volnay in the making.

Lovely aromatic fresh fruit. Perfumed and with a touch of sweet oak spice. Dark and more brooding on the palate, tannins are dry and there's only just enough fruit weight to carry them. But there's still a juicy streak through the middle. (JH)

Somewhat curiously, this possesses at once the most elegant, the ripest yet also the coolest nose among these three examples from Volnay with its lightly spiced black fruit and rose petal and violet nose that merges seamlessly with the rich, full, serious, firm yet utterly refined and intensely mineral suffused flavors that are focused, linear and hugely long. This is a striking wine and as good as the Taillepieds and Clos des Chˆnes are, this has another dimension of overall depth. Built to age and it will absolutely require it.

Flavours of flowers and ripe black fruit. Very warm taste, medium bodied, long finish, cherry notes, right level of acidity, classic Burgundy, lots of pleasure.

Eighty-six hectares of grand and premier cru vineyards. One hundred thirty total hectares in the Cote d'Or. Eighty crus produced each vintage. Two hundred seventy-five years of history. Bouchard Père et Fils is truly an institution in Beaune. The Maison was founded by father and son Michel and Joseph Bouchard in 1731, and the family wine merchant business has grown steadily ever since, taking any opportunity to add to its vineyard holdings along the way. Not to be completely overshadowed by its wines, Bouchard conducts business in the very center of Beaune in the old Chateau de Beaune, whose storied past rivals that of the Maison. In 1995, the Champagne family of Joseph Henriot took control of Bouchard, resulting in improvements in quality, not to mention the addition of more top-level vineyard sites. Reds of particular interest include the flagship Beaune Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus and the Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. As for whites, the Meursault Genevrières, Meursault Perrières, Chevalier-Montrachet and Montrachet are all great interpreters of their particular sites, exhibiting the many nuances of grand and premier cru Chardonnay.
