($150; a 55/45 blend of cabernet franc and merlot) Good deep ruby-red. Pungent minerality lifts the aromas of black cherry, licorice and violet. Creamy, smooth and dense, but with superb floral definition to the lush black fruit flavors. Most impressive today on the rising finish, where the serious but fully ripe tannins coat the front teeth. A great H Block vintage in the making, this has the tannic structure of a serious Right Bank wine.

Intense and chewy, rich, full-bodied, dense and tannic, with earthy currant, mineral, graphite and licorice. This is both powerful and focused, deep and persistent, ending with chewy, grainy tannins, making it a wine for the cellar. Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

My favorite wine is the 2007 Proprietary Red H Block from the Hudson Vineyard. Made from an intriguing blend of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot, it exhibits a dense purple color as well as aromas of blue and black fruits intertwined with spring flowers, chocolate, and espresso roast. This pure, full-bodied 2007 is both hedonistic and intellectually satisfying. It should continue to evolve for 10-12+ years.

(14.1% alcohol): Dark ruby-red. Deep, sexy nose combines black raspberry, currant, musky molten chocolate, coffee and toffee. Broad, sweet and plush, with its dark raspberry, licorice and black pepper flavors lifted by a spicy quality. Seriously tannic but not dry, this blend spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate. While it has the restrained sweetness to give pleasure already, this very rich wine has enough acidity and ripe tannins to maintain its shape in a cool cellar for at least another decade. With 24 hours in the recorked bottle, it shut down and showed more obvious tannic spine. - Stephen Tanzer

Not quite a newcomer, in terms of the powers behind it, Arietta was founded in 1996 as a partnership between renowned winemaker John Kongsgaard, his wife Maggy, and wine auctioneer Fritz Hatton. The Hudson Ranch (Napa/Carneros) provides the mostly Cabernet Franc of H Block and the Merlot and Syrah of Variation One. Make sure to try some of their first foray into the realm of white On The White Keys which is made from hillside Sauvignon Blanc and old vine Semillon.
