($72) Dark red. Powerful kirsch and blackcurrant aromas are deepened by dark chocolate and mocha. Deep and chewy, with concentrated cherry and dark berry flavors, picking up baking spices on the back end. A rich, fleshy style of pinot, with serious finishing power and length.

A high-toned and notably cool nose of delicate and airy red berry fruit aromas trimmed in just a hint of wood that is also reflected by the detailed, intense and minerally flavors that seem to possess less depth than I'm used to seeing from this vineyard as well as noticeable finishing dryness and tanginess. We'll see if this comes together but at present, this is pretty awkward.

A soft, fleshy style, with attractive aromas and medium-weight plum and black cherry fruit that's delicate and spicy.

From heritage California clones, the 2006 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard displays high tannins, lots of body and depth, a distinct damp earthiness, and plenty of pomegranate and red cherry fruit.

Light garnet in color, this wine has an elegant nose of raspberries, cherries, and crushed herb aromas. In the mouth it is equally as elegant, even distinguished, with gorgeously textured flavors of raspberry, red apple skin, hints of citrus oil, and a woody undertone that provides a base note to the brighter flavors. Perfectly balanced, this is a beautiful rendition of Pinot Noir that gives ample time to reflect as much in its long finish.

NR alcohol Aromas: very clean nose with pristine impressions of Swan, Pommard and Mount Eden clones; cherry, licorice and hints of herb and earth Palate: focused black stone fruits with lush earth and licorice flavors, firm acidity Impression: due to firmness currently, would recommend three - five years in the cellar where I expect it really excel

The emergence of Williams Selyem as one of California's Pinot Noir leaders is an improbable success story. Founders Burt Williams and Ed Selyem started making wine under the Hacienda del Rio Winery label in a garage in Fulton. Their first wine was a 1981 Zinfandel, but very soon after they began their quest for great Pinot Noir. By the late 1980s, Williams had retired as a typesetter and Selyem had left his job as a wine retailer, and they devoted themselves full-time to winemaking. In 1997, John Dyson bought the winery with plans of planting a 20-acre Russian River vineyard and gradually expanded production. Williams continued to make wine into 2000, after which time Bob Cabral, formerly of Alderbrook and Hartford Court, took over as Executive winemaker.

Quality across the board is exceptionally high, with especially notable Pinot Noirs. There are no secrets to Williams Selyem's success: they seek low yield, fully ripened grapes from superb vineyard sources.
