A vintage that's always shown well, the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape is a classic, textbook example of this cuvee. Full-bodied, rich, structured and with high, but sweet, tannin, it has fantastic black cherry, currants, licorice, and roasted herb-like qualities all soaring from the glass. While it's approachable now, it needs another handful of years in the cellar.

Very rich and densely packed, with a huge core of raspberry ganache, macerated plum and hoisin sauce notes wrapped by dark licorice, Turkish coffee and charred applewood. The long finish ripples with tannins, but this is velvety and well-integrated. Needs some time. Rather serious juice. Best from 2011 through 2033. 2,000 cases made.

Located in the northern part of Chateauneuf du Pape and owned by the Daumen family since 1905, the domaine began bottling a small percentage of wine under its own label in the 1960s. Current owner Jean Paul Daumen's father, Maxime, built new cellars and installed foudres to accommodate the expanding production. The domaine's vines cover approximately 30 hectares and average 60 years of age.
Yields are kept low and all grapes are de-stemmed prior to fermentation. 80% of the production is done in old oak foudres with the remainder in neutral barrels. Biodynamic principles are used in both the vineyards and cellar, and no SO2 is used during the vinification process.
