Firm and well-structured, with a mix of spicy dried berry, currant, blackberry and blueberry, picking up a nice touch of mineral and sage and ending with well-integrated tannins.

Saturated red. Powerfully scented nose displays sexy red and dark berry liqueur, candied cherry and a musky floral quality. Deeply concentrated black raspberry and cherry flavors are energized by tangy minerals and pick up rooty licorice and sassafras with air. Finishes with notes of black pepper and smoky Indian spices and excellent persistence.

The 2006 Pinot Noir Southing exhibits an evolved medium ruby color as well as a big, spicy, earthy nose displaying hints of roasted herbs, sweet cherries, and red currants. The complex aromatics are followed by a medium-bodied wine with complex flavors, melted tannins, and plenty of red fruit as well as tart cherries.

This is not as evidently ripe as its two stable mates as the nose is fresher and brighter and while ripe, there is a touch of vegetal character to the red pinot fruit that complements the round, supple, textured and sappy flavors that finish with a touch of youthful asperity as well as with noticeable warmth that dominates the otherwise persistent finale. Serving temperature is very important to the ability to enjoy this wine because once it climbs very far above cellar temperature, the alcohol dominates.

A very well made wine, but the high level of acidity made it feel somewhat out of balance.

Dark ruby and with an intense aroma. However I believe this wine is better when it's younger.

Not sure how to describe this wine. Closed closed closed. I would expect that the 06 would be about ready but I drank this wine over 5 days and just thought the first four nights it wasn't great. Somehome on the 5th night the aromas really poured out and the flavor profile showed up. This is without a doubt a big pinot that could use another few years in the cellar. And yes I vacuumed the bottle each night to give it a chance.

Sea smoke is a very unique Pinot with |atypical| Pinot fruit almost making the Pinto grape difficult to identify. nevertheless, a terrific wine, balanced and food friendly. Hides the high alcohol content reasonably well.

The 2006 Sea Smoke Southing was highly anticipated and shared with family before a nice home-cooked meal. The wine was crystal clear with a beautiful plum red color in the glass. The nose contained notes of oak, smoke (of course)and cherry, along with a hint of cranberry. When teased in the glass, the legs were thin and fast moving. The palate was soft, round and juicy with balanced tannins. I would characterize the Sea Smoke as rustic with a hint of elegance. Delightful and delicious.

For years, vintners have coveted a stretch of land in the western end of Santa Barbara's Santa Rita Hills AVA known to have the perfect microclimate, soils, and exposure to grow world-class Pinot Noir. In 1999, fulfilling a long-held dream of owner Bob Davids, this sought-after stretch of land became Sea Smoke Vineyard.

Sea Smoke produces Pinot Noir grown exclusively on the south-facing hillsides of their estate vineyards. On summer evenings, the Santa Ynez River canyon funnels a cool maritime fog layer (sea "smoke") across the hillsides, slowing the ripening process and providing the extended maturation period essential to the development of top-quality Pinot Noir.
