($85) Bright greenish yellow. Knockout nose combines citrus peel, white peach, minerals, iodine, spices and creme brulee; I'd love to throw this into a Burgundy tasting. Rich, fat and sweet but with enough mineral spine to maintain its shape and freshness. With aeration, this very concentrated wine became juicier, brighter and more gripping. Finishes with a youthful bitter edge that really grabs hold of the palate. Includes a lot of fruit from the Hyde and Hudson clones, which produce tiny clusters.

Notably rich and perfumed, with deep, persistent, concentrated layers of fig, honeysuckle, tangerine and nectarine that are opulent and unctuous. Sensational finish too.

The 2006 Chardonnay Ma Belle Fille, which comes from their highest altitude vineyard, with a southerly exposure, and again, mostly old Wente clones like virtually all of these Chardonnays, has notes of quince, nectarines, white currants, and almost a liqueur of rocks. The wine has superb concentration and strikes me as one of the very best of the 2006 Chardonnays made in California.

Excellent showed the best white of the night. Not as well rounded as Kistler or as crisp as Kongarrd

Wow! This is the best Ma Belle Fille I have tasted since the 2002. Butterscotch, carmel and apricot jump out of the glass. There is a perfect balance of fruit and wood that works well with food. The wine is still evolving and will get better over the next two years.

Peter Michael's estate vineyards (founded in 1982) are what make his wines truly exceptional. Sugarloaf Ranch sits high above Knights Valley in eastern Sonoma County, and from its rocky volcanic soil come Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Alexander Mountain Estate Vineyard, above Alexander Valley, provides additional Chardonnay. All Peter Michael wines are site-driven single vineyard bottlings, whether from the estate or the limited sourced appellations. The line-up of estate wines is supplemented by a Pinot Noir from Pisoni Vineyard called "Le Moulin Rouge."

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
