The 2006 Syrah Cuvee Keltie, a 100% whole cluster Syrah that sees no new oak, is a serious, backward offering meant for long-term aging. Its dense purple color is accompanied by notes of roasted meats, ground pepper, damp earth, truffles, underbrush, and forest floor. This superbly complex, full-bodied wine possesses high tannins as well as surprisingly fine acidity despite an elevated technical pH of 3.93. Drink this intriguing, complex Syrah over the next 10-12 years.

Cool climate western Sonoma Syrah at its best! Not decanted, this was very open and complex only 30 minutes in after being opened. Indeed a new world wine, but absolutely nodding heavily at the Northern Rhone, fermented with the stems on! Nose: Cracked pepper, black berry, camphor, black currant, some violets, and a little bit of a roast beef note. Palate: Medium, to full bodied, however very light on the palate. Pepper, savory black currant and black berry, meaty undertones, very long and persistent on the palate. Great acidity and firm tannins give freshness and structure, a beaute!

WINEMAKER TASTING NOTES Earth, tar, spice and a brilliant plum cake aroma fill-out the deep dark nose. Full bodied and expansive on the palate with deep dark cassis, white flowers, stems, earthy mineral driven flavors, blackberry, black cherry and cocoa powder. This 2006 is also showing more sweet fruit and |ripeness| even though alcohols look pretty close to that of it's 2005 counterpart.

Pax Mahle produced a wide selection of vineyard-designate Syrahs from Northern California under this label for many years before leaving to begin another project, Wind Gap. Under the Pax label, he utilized indigenous fermentations, minimal handling, unobtrusive use of French oak and bottling without filtering or fining. Great care was always taken in the vineyards to produce the best fruit possible by maintaining the vines on an individual basis and ensuring low yields. In addition to many Syrahs, Pax also produced several white wines including Roussanne, Viognier, and a white blend. In 2009, with the departure of Mahle, the brand was re-named Donelan Wines.
