($95; 100% cabernet sauvignon) Saturated medium ruby. Black fruit, graphite and coffee aromas are lifted by a floral element. Big, powerful and youthfully monolithic; currently less complex on the nose and palate than the Howell Mountain version but the powerful blackberry, violet and mint flavors should expand with extended bottle aging. Quite dominated by its firm acids and huge, oak-driven tannins today. All these labels say 14.8% but this one is actually 15.2%, according to winemaker Capiaux. Lay this one down.

A stunning effort is the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder. It exhibits blue and black fruits along with notions of licorice, graphite, and incense, a formidable array of concentrated fruit flavors, full-bodied power, a silkiness that is atypical for this vintage, and a long, 40+ second finish. This superb Cabernet Sauvignon can be drunk now or cellared for 15+ years.

Still early in its life. Has shed some baby fat and the acidity is quite strong. A food wine. Paired with Italian food, including tomato sauce and balsamic vinegar, the wine showed well. Would not have been a great wine to just sit back and drink.

No expense was spared by Betty O'Shaughnessy building her Howell Mountain winery, developing the steeply terraced vineyards and hiring Sean Capiaux as winemaker. The winery also produces a Mt. Veeder bottling .
