  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($68; this bottling comprises one barrel each from Rosella's, Gap's Crown, Kanzler and Miron vineyards) Medium red. Vibrant strawberry and raspberry aromas offer superb clarity and intensity, with cinnamon and mace adding complexity. Utterly seamless and velvety, with deep, sweet red and dark berry preserve flavors and no obvious tannins. Turns even sweeter with air and takes on a spicy complexity. The wonderfully pure fruit carries through the long, juicy finish. This is awfully delicious right now.

Mature and vibrant, with lively cola, sassafras and dried berry flavors, ending with a very delicate aftertaste. From Kanzler, Miron, Gap's Crown and Rosella's vineyards.

This is arguably the most elegant and the most aromatically complex nose in the range as it features a pure red pinot fruit and a touch of ripe cherry and move seamlessly into round but nicely detailed flavors where the depth of the soil can also be found on the mid-palate but unfortunately, the finish is awkward as the acid and tannins component are separate elements and not surprisingly, the alcohol level cannot hide gracefully.

  • Kosta-Browne started its supersonic trek to celebrity status in 1997, when pals Dan Kosta and Michael Browne pooled their restaurant tips and purchased a half ton of Pinot Noir, a manual crusher-de-stemmer and a used barrel. Adding the business and investment-savy Chris Costello gave Kosta Browne the requisite resources to expand into the Pinot force they are today. Fruit is sourced from top-notch vineyards in the Russian River, Sonoma Coast, and Santa Lucia Highlands. Their philosophy is to make Pinots that express intense flavor and the "sweet spot" of their respective vineyards. In addition to their vineyard-designate wines, Kosta Browne also produces two blends: one from the Sonoma Coast and the other from Russian River.
