    ($185; 13.7% alcohol; blended with 8% merlot and 1% cab franc) Good full, deep ruby. Deep, brooding aromas of dark fruits, licorice, violet, bitter chocolate and minerals. At once denser and tighter than the Estate Cuvee, showing a rather muscular, claret-like minerality today but also a stronger fruit component. Finishes with terrific spine for aging. Lay this one down. With the 2007 vintage, the label will say Grand Vin. Incidentally, the winery maximized the quality of its 2006s by selling off more than 500 cases' worth of wine through a private label.

    Complex, if on a restrained scale, with nutmeg, dried currant and berry flavors, joined by mineral and sage. Tight, focused, balanced and very Bordeaux-like in its restraint and refinement. 650 cases made.

    The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon State Lane Vineyard represents 600 cases made from a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc. It is more backward, tight, and restrained than the 2005, but is substantial and broad in the mouth. A wine of considerable intensity as well as elegance and overall balance, this deep, concentrated 2006 requires 5-6 years of bottle age, as it has closed down considerably since I tasted it last year. It, too, should last for three decades.

    Inky garnet in color, this blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc has a fantastic aroma of violets, lavender, and sweet tobacco. In the mouth, soft, velvet, beautifully sweet tannins caress dark brooding flavors of graphite, wet dirt, tobacco, and a ripe core of black cherry. A hint of cola flavor emerges in the tremendous finish. 650 cases made.

The historic State Lane Vineyard, in the heart of the Napa Valley, was first leased by Beringer Estates in 1972 and was used to launch Beringer's famous Private Reserve Cabernet. The Kapcsandys purchased the property in May, 2000 and in 2001 teamed up with legendary winemaker Helen Turley and her viticulturist husband John Wetlaufer. After careful research, they discovered a unique vineyard with multiple micro-geological conditions and decided to redevelop the vineyard for its utmost potential and produce world-class red wines under the Kapcsandy label. The first two vintages - 2003 and 2004 - were produced by Helen Turley. For 2005 Rob Lawson, the winemaker at Napa Wine Company for the past 16 years, was brought aboard and in 2007, Denis Malbec became the sole winemaking consultant.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
