($54) Good red-ruby. Raspberry and lead pencil on the nose. Sweet and lush, with a slightly roasted quality to the fruit syrup flavors. I find this a bit chunky today, with the tannins quite apparent.

The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa has gotten slightly better over the past year. It exhibits plenty of black currant fruit notes intertwined with hints of tobacco leaf, licorice, and forest floor as well as deep, medium to full-bodied flavors, ripe tannins, and a long finish. Enjoy it over the next 12-15+ years.

Tight and compact, with concentrated herb, dried currant, sage and savory, earthy notes. Rich and balanced, with good depth and structure. 25,000 cases made.

Very, very heavy bottle. Scented, sandalwood and a little like putting your nose in the neck of a man who has just put on some very classy cologne. Serious and self-conscious wine. Smooth, manicured and elegant with lots of smartly cut, ripe modern fruit and background notes of coffee and chocolate. Very balanced, very polished. But somehow, for me, all a little bit toooooo smooth. (TC)

I think I can definitively say this wine has peaked...and it came into its own, remarkable and way memorable compared to the previous 2 bottles - the fruit was expressive, tannins are all but faded and it just had impressive power with all the classic Cab qualities. Gave it an hour+ of air from just popping the cork. Throwing no sediment either. Was a good time to drink this!

Another year-and-a-half really was good for this wine. Smooth and well integrated. Delicious.

Tasty Cab, Heavy on the tannins. Went well with our meal of chicken, but a bid acidic until the bottle opened up a bit.

The past two weekends our travel youth hockey team played in 6 games in two cities. The parents consummed many wines partially from my cellar. A quick rundown: Phelps Napa 05 - Nice wine with aa touch of vanilla, color, body intact. The 06 was slightly better. The 06 Merlot similar wine with less complexity. The Mondavi Napa 08 Cab is drinking really well - Soft, complex flavors perfect color and body. The Mondavi Oakville's (04 and 06) were VERY dry, more oak and less fruit. Still a good wine, color and body were in good shape. The 689 was very nice, different in flavor profile then the others - color was perfect the body was slightly lighter.

Since its founding in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards has been on the cutting edge of many California wine developments. From the Bordeaux-blend Insignia, first made in 1974 and Wine Spectator's wine of the year for the 2002 vintage; to the resurrection of California Syrah, also first produced in 1974, the winery has earned critical acclaim for its many estate-grown wines.
