  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 94

($480) Bright ruby. Pungent dark berry and cherry-vanilla aromas are complemented by anise, pipe tobacco and black cardamom. Smoky cherry and blackcurrant flavors are deep and nicely focused, with building tannins and a seductively sweet quality. Shows more power than the La Mouline but less finesse. Finishes on a lively, bittersweet cherry note, with outstanding persistence and lingering elements of spice and smoke.

  • Jancis Robinson | Rating:

Brilliant crimson and very, very Syrah nose. Marcel suggested it smelt of griottes cherries. This seemed to be tightening up. In Late Oct 2009 it seemed a little bit less luscious than La Mouline but it had a very confident line and direction and good attack.

The exquisite 2006 Cote Rotie La Turque may or may not be as good. It exhibits exceptional aromas of bacon fat, smoked duck, soy, black currants, blackberries, and graphite. Full-bodied and dense with good acidity, outrageous concentration, and a finish that lasts over 60 seconds, this is amazing stuff!

This pulls together grip, minerality and fruit, with charcoal and espresso laying the foundation, supporting crushed plum, fig sauce and mulled currant fruit, which then gives way to a vibrant, iron- and tobacco-filled finish that leaves a mouthwatering feel. Very impressive.

  • Marcel Guigal - the so-called "pivot" of the Cote-Rotie appellation - is both an owner and negociant, and vinifies over 40% of all Cote-Rotie. His father, Etienne, started out quite modestly in 1946, and over the next decades the company has grown to encompass all that is best in the Rhone Valley. Not only known for the massive hits in Hermitage and Cote-Rotie, the Guigal name is synonymous with quality all along the scale, from the humble Cotes-du-Rhone to the Big Three - La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque.
