Tightly wound, firmly tannic, full-bodied and dense. Chewy and extracted, this is a touch rustic and cedary, but also deep, complex and concentrated. Needs time.

aerated, then left in decanter 2 hrs. Red fruit on nose. Wine seemed to lack much of any mid-palate. Not enough fruit to balance the oak, IMHO.

An oh hum, bottle of wine. Not bad but not memorable.

Bright fruit up front, followed by a mouth full of wood. Way over-oaked.

Nose of earth, gravel, dust, minerals and black fruit. Dry cherry, cranberry and cigar-box on the palate. Wine is well balanced with well rounded tannins and a long, dry finish. Everything you expect from this Oakville. Pair with |prime| prime rib steak.

Quite dark with thick, moderately pigmented legs. Attractive, rather forward aromas of cedar, cherry, and muted oak. Quite lush in the mouth with plenty of fruit and velvety - primarily oak driven - tannin. Good length. Textbook modern styled Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. Can be aged but I doubt cellaring is warranted - the wine drinks very well now.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
