($44) Vivid red. Vibrant aromas of black raspberry, cherry and pungent herbs, with subtle floral nuances adding complexity. Fleshy red and dark berry flavors offer very good depth and sweetness, picking up tangy minerals on the back end. At once fleshier and livelier than the Russian River bottling-and longer and sweeter on the finish. This is delicious.

An upper register and very expressive nose of wild red berries nuanced by hints of underbrush and spice notes introduce delicious, balanced, forward, supple, intense and transparent barely middle weight flavors that offer solid flavor authority and fine persistence. This is a relatively understated effort and I like the balance here as there is almost no warmth as long as the serving temperature is kept cool.

The most complex and complete of the 2006 Freemans, this is fragrant, with wilted rose petal, blackberry and wild berry and hints of loamy earth. Both supple and firm on the finish.

Ken and Akiko Freeman's search for the perfect Sonoma Coast vineyard site lead them to form a winery based on partnerships with top notch Chardonnay and Pinot Noir growers in both the Russian River and Sonoma Coast appellations. Winemaker Ed Kurtzman, who previously developed the formidable Pinot program at Testarossa, lends his expertise in the production of vineyard-designate and appellation wines. From their initial vintage in 2002, the Freemans have increased production from 500 to over 5,000 cases of small lot bottlings.
