  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91

($120; a 58/42 blend of cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon, from David Abreu's Madrona Ranch vineyard behind Spottswoode in St. Helena) Aromas of black cherry, violet, licorice, tobacco and cardamom. Supple and fruity for the year, with a juicy quality to the flavors of dark berries, violet, Asian spices and cedary oak. A rather claret-like midweight: according to Andy Erickson, it's the cabernet sauvignon component that contributes the roundness to this blend. Finishes firm and stylish.

Combines ripe plum, black cherry and raspberry fruit with earthy sage, mineral and pencil lead. The texture is smooth and fleshy, and the flavors run deep, ending with firm, fine-grained tannins. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2006 La Magdalena, a blend of 58% Cabernet Franc and 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, it exhibits notes of lead pencil shavings, blue fruits, subtle smoke, and forest floor. While medium-bodied and elegant, it is the least impressive wine in this fascinating portfolio.
