($52) Pale golden yellow. Fine bouquet of papaya, nut oil and lime. The luscious yet crisp passion fruit flavors are enlivened by a refreshingly salty minerality. Light and wonderfully drinkable. A charming riesling with a sweet, spicy finish.

More intense citrus and beautifully focused nose, with riper, sweeter fruit than the Kreuznacher Kr”tenpfuhl but still has that zesty mineral length.

The 2006 Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Spatlese delivers luscious, juicy ripe poached peach and red raspberries dusted with brown spices and pepper. Intense and faintly sweet-tart in character at this youthful stage, it lacks the clarity or levity of the Kirschheck, but certainly not the sheer length, which is saltier, smokier, sappier, spicier, and altogether more insistent. Not that this needs to try too hard to convince me either to take the next sip, or to revisit another bottle in a few years. It should have a good 15 years in it. From a quartzitic site along the Nahe at the edge of the city (and which might have been built-on had the municipal water supply not been located there, the reason also why it must be farmed organically).

Honeysuckle and white flower on the nose. Semi-sweet attack that dissipates in the mid-palate; leads to a crisp, disappearing finish.

Making a strong case for the superiority of Nahe to its Mosel competition, Donnhoff crafts Rieslings of presence, structure, and indescribable complexity. After several years of vineyard management, Helmut is the latest in a long line of Donnhoffs to oversee winemaking at the estate, founded in 1750. His vineyard portfolio includes the best plots in the most renowned vineyards in the area, and of the 20 hectares under vine, roughly 80% are planted to Riesling. The Donnhoff style is set apart by its fullness and richness, inspiring exalted poetic lauding from critics and loyalists alike.
