($42) Deep red-ruby. Raspberry, mocha, tobacco, brown spices, menthol and herbs on the lively and inviting nose. Supple on entry, then a tad disjointed in the middle, with flavors of red fruits, smoke, flowers and earth along with some slightly edgy acidity. Finishes with dusty tannins and a light peppery element. This calls for two or three years of patience.

Earthy and spicy, with dense cassis, chocolate, blackberry and tar notes. Youthfully tannic and with vibrant acidity, it's a fine second wine to Christian Moueix's Dominus. (LM)

The 2006 Napanook (a 3,500-case blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot) is made in a riper, more California style than usual, displaying more exuberant, up-front notes of kirsch, black currants, and plums. Deep and full-bodied with low acidity, sweet tannin, and a fleshy, succulent personality, it tastes like a classic Napa Cabernet.

dense nose, palate is complex with fresh almonds and bitter chocolate notes. The entry is very full and velvety, enveloped with round, deep chewy tannins. The finish is tobacco and cocoa beans. Overall very dense, tight flavor of bitter chocolate and some back-end dark fruit. Tannins are huge and really lend this wine to drinking only with dark game meat, beef or perhaps a hard, pungent cheese...would not drink this on its own. Napanook 2006 is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Merlot.

Since its inaugural vintage in 1983, the wines of Dominus Estate have been crafted in a traditional and terroir-driven style by the luminous Christian Moueix of Petrus fame. Unable to pass up the change to make what he called the Haut-Brion of Napa, Moueix came to own the legendary Napanook Vineyard through a partnership with and eventual buyout of Robin Lail and Marcia Smith, the daughters of John Daniel of Inglenook Winery. Moueix eschews irrigation, acidification, and the heavy usage of oak (18 months in French barrels, with only 1/3 new) common amongst his Napa colleagues. The exceptional terroir of Napanook in combination with his skillful viticulture and traditional winemaking techniques have repeatedly resulted in some of the most broadly enjoyable Napa Cabs available and clearly place Dominus in the upper echelon of this genre. Since 1996 the estate has released a second wine called Napanook.
