($45) Medium red. Very fresh, spicy aromas of raspberry and redcurrant, with a gentle floral accent. A sweet, finely etched midweight with fresh red berry flavors, supple texture and gentle spiciness. Finishes with an echo of raspberry and excellent clarity. This is already drinking well.

Mont Olivet's 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape is a classic, with tons of garrigue, dried cherries, spice-box and street market like characteristics in a medium-bodied, focused, classy package. It's still not yet fully mature and will drink nicely for another decade, easily. The blend is 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 6% Mourvedre and the rest an assortment of permitted varieties, all aged in concrete tanks and old foudre.

Silky, but with solid grip in the background, holding the fig, currant and blackberry fruit at bay, while roasted sage, tobacco and spice notes flitter throughout. Has a very silky, pure finish.

Nice CDP, but not much weight or texture. Red fruits, almost a cooked character, with earth and licorice-like masculine flavors.

The estate, run by the esteemed Sabon family, can trace its history back to 1547. It includes 25 hectares of Chateauneuf du Pape and parcels in Le Pied de Baud, lieu-dit Monalivet, and les Gallimardes, as well as 15 hectares in Cotes du Rhone. Making wine is still a family affair, and three brothers - Jean-Claude, Pierre and Bernard - run the property, with Jean-Claude's son Thierry, the current winemaker, trained in the tradition of the domaine since day one. The wines are a majority Grenache, with Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault completing the blends. Mont-Olivet produces a red and white Chateuneuf du Pape, and a red and white Cotes du Rhone. The "Cuvee du Papet" is only bottled in the most exceptional vintages.
