  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($100-$135) Full, deep red-ruby. Sexy aromas of roasted raspberry, plum liqueur, coffee, smoke, mocha and chocolate. Enticing and exotic Pomerol, with lush flavors of roasted plum and musky coffee leavened by a medicinal reserve. In spite of its enticing sweetness and fullness, this is rather backward today, with the dusty, substantial tannins calling for at least a few years of patience. But the wine's firm backbone and excellent breadth and length suggest it should age well.

Fresh mushroom, blackberry and wild raspberry aromas follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate, with chewy tannins and a medium finish. A little loosely knit.

Sweet, big and bold and juicy. Quite open and loose compared with some other Pomerols in the Moueix stable. Slightly green tannins on the finish. Lacks a little intensity and nerve.

This property is finally hitting on full cylinders and has returned to the form it had in the late 1970s and mid-1980s. This is a deep ruby/purple-colored wine with notes of graphite, menthol, licorice, and truffle. The fruit character verges between black cherry and creme de cassis notes. The wine exhibits noble and complex aromatics, moderately high tannins, but a full-bodied, firm, muscular structure that will require some patience.

A little shy this time, but its all there, must be in a slumber phase.

Chateau Certan-de-May is situated on the plateau of Pomerol on the right bank of the Gironde Estuary. Its neighbors include Vieux-Chateaux Certan, Petrus, and Le Pin. The chateau's name comes from a Scottish family who settled in Pomerol during the 17th century. The estate produces about 2,000 cases a year from clay soil and gravel-covered vineyards. The wine's blend is made of 70% Merlot and the rest consists of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Since 1974, the property has been run by Mme. Bareau-Bader and her son. The style of the wine is very big and concentrated, which stems from its vinification process. The fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by up to a month's maceration before aging in new oak barrels. The best vintages of Chateau Certan-de-May can age for more than twenty years.
