($55) Bright red. Explosively aromatic bouquet of dark cherry, blackcurrant, Asian spices, minerals and pungent flowers. This reminded me of a suave northern Rhone wine in its energetic display of spicy dark fruits, minerality and floral character. The tangy dark berry flavors coat the palate but betray no excess ripeness or weight. Silky, fresh and sweet on the finish, with the spiciness echoing. Lovely stuff.

A beauty, the 2006 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard exhibits sweet notes of raspberries, spring flowers, cherries, and strawberries. This subtly smoky/forest floor-flavored Pinot is made in a medium-bodied, feminine, elegant style.

Dried berry, plum and currant flavors have hints of herb and mineral, ending with a mix of sage and dusty berry.

Nice light red color. Toasted oak on the nose, a little vanilla. Very little fruit on the nose or palette. Light mouthfeel but slow-rolls you to a gigantic finish. Manages to hit every one of your senses but stay light and fresh. Some heat on the back too, it sort of lingers about like it has no place else to be at the moment. After 30-45 minutes in the glass, the fruit came out of this one. Cherry with a little bit of sour in there. Much more complexity. More balanced between fruit, oak, tannin, alcohol; very rounded out. Almost a stickyness about it, like I was digging the wine out of my gums for twenty minutes. Ultimately, not my exact style of Pinot but very much enjoyed nonetheless.

Owners Doug and Ana Stewart took a meandering path to the world of winegrowing and making. He from a Sonoma farming family, but detoured through the world of teaching and even ice cream making, and she from Ecuador, pursuing eco-adventures and jobs. A search for "marginal" vineyard land lead them to Anderson Valley, where they purchased a 200-acre sheep ranch that has slowly developed into their estate vineyard. In addition to their estate wines, they contract fruit from some of the top properties in the Anderson Valley: Sauvignon Blanc and Gewurztraminer from Ferrington, Chardonnay from Savoy, and Pinot Gris from Wiley. Quality is high and production, supervised by Ryan Hodgins, who also consults for Hanzell, remains relatively low.
