  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 87

($90) Medium ruby-red. Tight aromas of dark raspberry and smoky oak; much brighter than the nose of the Arise bottling. Red fruit flavors offer moderate depth and nuance but an attractive tactile, velvety texture. Finishes with slightly gritty tannins and a building oakiness.

A blend of 48% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2006 Paramour exhibits slightly more tannin than the Illustration, and comes across as an elegant, restrained, austere red. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a medium-bodied effort with a somewhat clipped personality. While it is my least favorite of this group, I think more will emerge with 2-3 years of bottle age. It should last for 15+ years.

Dense and complex, with a touch of velvet to smooth it out. Aromas of black currant and espresso lead to layered cherry, blueberry and cedar flavors that finish with ripe, loamy tannins. Needs time. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

With the designation of Napa's fourteenth AVA in 2004, Oak Knoll District is now poised to bring forth the prominence and elegance of Merlot from this region. Perched to seize the day as Oak Knoll's foremost Merlot is Blackbird Vineyards, located in the heart of the district.

Since 1999, this former walnut orchard, first planted with 5717 vines two years earlier, has quietly provided fruit to many of Napa's finest winemakers, for whom it has yielded astonishing reviews and stellar scorings. Purchased by entrepreneur Michael Polenske in 2003, Blackbird Vineyards is now an ultra premium label in its own right.
