Jancis Robinson | Rating:Mid crimson. Pale rim. Rather strange ashy nose with an edge of vegetation. Quite restrained in build ' certainly no excess of sweetness nor oak though there is some slightly cheesy creaminess on the finish. Still quite a bit of tannin in evidence. Not a standout first. International Wine Cellar | Rating: 97Bright medium ruby. Brooding, pure aromas of blackberry, blueberry, boysenberry, espresso and minerals. Wonderfully dense yet weightless, with a penetrating calcaire energy to its sappy black fruit and mineral flavors. This has filled out impressively since its early days in barrel but is still just at the beginning of its evolution. The slowly mounting, compellingly long finish saturates the palate with flavor, and the substantial tannins are amazingly sweet and fine-grained. My early candidate for wine of the vintage: this fills the mouth with perfume but its fruit of steel suggests that it will last a very long time. Wine Advocate | Rating: 93Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London.The 2006 Chateau Ausone has a fragrant bouquet compared to the 2006 Pavie, fomenting more secondary aromas such as smoke, cigar box, potpourri and a smear of Seville orange marmalade. The palate is very refined on the entry, rounded and supple in the mouth. It clearly does not have the density and weight of the Pavie, but it exerts an insistent grip in the mouth and the tannins have symmetry on the finish. Classed as Grand Cru Classe A, the best of the appellation, Chateau Ausone sits on a hill just south of St. Emilion. The chateau is named after the Roman poet Ausonius who owned over 100 acres of vineyard around Saint Emilion. The vineyards grow 50% Cabernet Franc and 50% Merlot grapes, producing approximately 2,000 cases a year. The chateau has a long history dating back to medieval times. After struggling during the first part of the twentieth century, the estate has seen a resurgence with the hires of Pascal Delbeck in 1976 and consultant Michel Rolland in recent years. Wines from Chateau Ausone require at least 10 years of bottle age after which they develop exotic flavors such as currant, black cherry and spice. Chateau Ausone also produces a second wine called Chapelle d'Ausone.
