($90) Palish green-yellow. Intriguing aromas of white peach, green tea, pear, nectarine, spices and minerals. Dense and powerful, but the flavors of nectarine and minerals are kept fresh by a green-appley acidity and a minty nuance. I find this stony, flinty wine a bit youthfully musclebound today. The slightly dry-edged finish features good spicy lift and a suggestion of butterscotch.

Pure, complex fruit is shaded by mineral and light cedary wood, yet the core fruit flavors of ripe white peach, apricot and subtle pear flavors make for an intriguing flavor profile. Needs time.

The 2006 Chardonnay Lauren Vineyard is a brilliant effort. One has to admire Aubert's ability to turn out something of this majesty in such a challenging year when so many Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards were filled with botrytis. Lemon blossom, orange marmalade, and white currant aromas jump from the glass of this light straw-colored cuvee with a greenish hue (a characteristic that also appears in the Aubert 2007s). Beautiful notes of tropical fruits and crushed rocks are present in this gorgeously rich, full-bodied, well-focused Chardonnay. All the Aubert Chardonnays offer abundant power, vivid acidity, and dramatic, laser-like focus.

A lovely wine. More austere and much more citrus than the 2005. Likely to develop a bit more complexity in the next two years.

The 2006 Chardonnay Lauren Vineyard looks to be the best of the litter, so to speak, in this vintage. Striking liquid minerality intermixed with quince, citrus blossom, crushed rocks, and white flowers are all present in this exceptionally concentrated, beautifully pure Chardonnay that, despite being aged in 100% new oak, reveals very little oak. This is another spectacular Chardonnay from Mark Aubert. It should drink nicely for 3-4 years, as I suspect these 2006s are on a faster evolutionary track than the 2005s. Obviously, there is no 2006 Quarry or Reuling Chardonnay.

Mark Aubert's four Sonoma Coast vineyard-designate Chardonnays - Lauren, Reuling, Quarry and Ritchie - have risen to cult status at a dizzying speed. Production is a limited 4,000 cases and the wines are available via the winery's mailing list. Aubert's career in winemaking reads like a fantasy, with his 1989 start as assistant winemaker at Peter Michael under the tutelage of Helen Turley, to his time at Colgin and Bryant Family. His eponymous wines are exemplary renditions of Chardonnay, replete with the rich bounty of the terroirs from which he sources the fruit. At the same time, they reflect his adept oenological hand, and maintain a focused balance of flavor and purity.

Aubert also makes several Pinot Noirs sourced from the Sonoma Coast as well as a "right-bank" Bordeaux style blend from Napa's Howell Mountain.
