($65; a combination of 40-, 70- and 96-year-old vines, according to Cyprien Arlaud) Good medium red. Musky red fruits, dried flowers and brown spices; this screams out Morey. Sweet and lush in the mouth, with a fleshy texture nicely framed by ripe balancing acidity. Finishes with big, broad, dusty tannins and notes of smoke and underbrush.

Bitter-sweet herbal concentrates dominate the Arlaud 2006 Morey-St.-Denis Les Millandes 'a bit as they do the corresponding Les Blanchards ' but here there is more convincing richness of black fruits and none of the blockage from bitterness. Subtly silken and creamy suggestions lend a soothing aspect harmoniously compatible with the wine's fresh fruit vivacity. Sweetly ripe purple plum and blackberry with subtly smoky, stony undertones make for a lovely, lingering finish. Plan to enjoy this over the next 6-8 years, but don't feel compelled to defer the pleasure of its company.

Noticeable reduction knocks down the nose though the intense yet reserved middle weight flavors offer fine detail on the linear and borderline strict finish that avoids being lean though it's certainly not generous, at least not at this point. Millandes can be severe in its youth so my score is offering the benefit of the doubt.

  • The dedication of the Arlaud family - father Herve, son Cyprien and daughter Bertille - has substantially improved this domaine each year. Their labor-intensive practices of hand pruning, stringent green harvesting and the use of a horse and plow instead of a tractor have produced the finest wines of the domaine's history.

The wines are textbook expressions of each terroir and are remarkably complex and richly balanced. Look for the domaine to continue to build its strong reputation in vintages ahead.
