2005 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Condrieu Vertige
FRANCE / RHÔNE / CONDRIEU
International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92
($120) Green-gold. Intense lime, pink grapefruit and white pepper on the nose, lifted by an energetic suggestion of dusty minerals. Racy acidity braces the taut, focused citrus flavors. This tangy, very pure Condrieu was raised in 100% new oak but it's not at all noticeable. An exotic floral quality arrives on the back end, adding complexity and depth.Author: Josh RaynoldsIssue: January/February 2007Wine Spectator | Rating: 96
A huge, youthfully raw Condrieu. Thickly layered anise, roasted fennel seed, Cavaillon melon, quince and persimmon flavors roll through a finish that's both creamy and minerally at the same time. Impressive now, but also has terrific density for cellaring. Sourced from the Coteau Vernon parcel, this sees 80 percent new oak for 18 months. 25 cases imported.Author: James Molesworth
Since taking over the family domaine in 1987, Yves Cuilleron has become one of the leaders of Condrieu's new generation of winemakers. His wines deftly straddle the fence of traditional and progressive and reflect a bold, broad purity of fruit and mineral that is perfectly balanced on the razor's edge of acidity and palate weight. Though mostly known for his Condrieu (Viognier), his reds excel at expressing the uniqueness of the St. Joseph appellation. This appellation tends to produce Syrah with a bit more elegance and red-fruit (raspberry, dusty cherry, pomegranate) character. The wines show nuances of licorice, earth and white pepper. Cuilleron also makes a Cote-Rotie (Syrah) and a St. Joseph-Blanc from Marsanne and Roussanne.
