  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 95

(#3 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2007) This estate is run by Lucien Michel, his wife, Marie-Jose, and daughter Claire. Keeping to tradition, they make only one cuvee of red Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The 2005 comprises 75 percent Grenache (from vines averaging 90 years of age), 15 percent Syrah and 10 percent Mourvedre and Cinsault. The Michels chose to retain 50 percent of the stems during fermentation to build the wine's structure. The wine is matured in foudres at least two years old.

Juicy and spicy, with lots of raspberry ganache and blueberry notes offset by hints of mulled spices, black tea and fig cake. Really picks up steam on the finish, with a racy, mouthwatering minerality. Should age beautifully. 4,250 cases made.

($49) Deep ruby. Seductively aromatic bouquet of red and dark berries, fresh flowers and minerals, with subtle garrigue and baking spice character. A round, creamy midweight with deep, sweet raspberry and blackcurrant flavors and a finish featuring gently gripping tannins and excellent smoky persistence. More civilized and fruity than the 2006 and 2004 releases from this top producer. (Wines of France, Mountainside, NJ)

Deep crimson. Lots of pepper and spice on the nose. Round, rich and polished - and extremely spicy - on the palate. Quite expressive already with real excitement. Some tannins still on the finish but so much ripe fruit that it promises very well.

Vieux Donjon has produced a classic Chateauneuf du Pape in 2005, and it has the focused, structured feel of the vintage, yet avoids the harsh tannin that's found in a lot of cuvees. Exhibiting impressive notes of peppered meats, tapenade, sweet spice, iron and garrigue, with a core of sweet Grenache fruit, this beauty is medium to full-bodied, concentrated and textured on the palate, with superb overall balance. It's enjoyable today, but will continue to evolve nicely for another decade or longer.

Drinking well right right now, but could go for years.

Tasted a second time and this wine is still going strong. Nice spiciness, great depth and still a long finish.

When the scents of heaven are paved w/ a gush of underground garrigue (which echoes relentlessly, I might add) and its textures coated in satin, it must be a Vieux Donjon. The 2005 is as pure and as voluptuous as any top notch Chateauneuf aspires to be. Notes of currant, game, dark fig cake and oodles of wild herbs make themselves noticeable from the get go. Donjon has been accessible sense release, and I imagine its flesh will continue to conceal its underlying tannin as she evolves. Donjon fans, you aint? seen nothing yet, watch out for the 2006

Le Vieux Donjon was founded by Marcel Michel, who did the first bottling at his domain in 1966. Since 1979 Marie Jose and Lucien Michel have run the property. The estate includes 14 ha of Chateauneuf du Pape, of which one ha is planted to white varieties. The vinification process is done in the traditional method with only one cuvee made of red and of white Chateauneuf du Pape. The cellars are situated on the route from Chateauneuf du Pape to Courthezon and the buildings at Avenue Saint Joseph serve as the private mansion for the family.
