2005 Turley Petite Sirah Rattlesnake Ridge
International Wine Cellar | Rating: 93
($44) Bright ruby color. Knockout nose combines black fruits, smoke, licorice, pepper and a strong rocky character. Quite suave on entry, then thick but vibrant in the middle, with powerful, well- integrated acidity accentuating the impression of intensity. A very tactile, concentrated petite sirah with terrific inner-palate energy. Finishes savory, chewy and very long. Impressive.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: May/June 2007Wine Advocate | Rating: 93
Although pinched with screeching tannins, the backward, unevolved 2005 Petite Syrah Rattlesnake Ridge will repay those who have the foresight to lay it away for 10-15 years. It is loaded with potential, but is nearly impenetrable at present.Author: Robert ParkerWine Spectator | Rating: 89
Fragrant white pepper and wild berry aromas are delightfully bright, with a juicy crunch amid the tight tannins. Spice, cedar and blackberry flavors stick around on the tannic finish. -MW

This seems just a bit past its prime but is still quite enjoyable. Blueberry and blackberry fruit. Rhubarb flavor adds pleasant tartness. Hints of white pepper and licorice. Good concentration with decent finish.Drink Dates: 2014-2016Author: StuTarheel

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
