(bottled in January of 2008) Good full medium ruby. Knockout nose combines superripe black raspberry, minerals, tobacco and brown spices. Then wonderfully sweet and lush in the mouth, with an almost liqueur-like ripeness to the flavors of cassis, tobacco, chocolate, coffee and loam. As dense and thick as this is, though, it's also quite suave and juicy. Finishes with palate-staining sweetness of fruit and outstanding breadth.

A bold, rich and ripe style, with complex black cherry, plum and wild berry fruit and a cedary graphite edge. Plush, concentrated and full-bodied, coating the palate, yet for all its size and chewiness this remains elegant, balanced and supported by firm tannins, showing a trace of heat on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

This vineyard, high above the Rutherford AVA, on the gorgeous hillside not far from the famed restaurant and hotel Auberge du Soleil, has produced a winner in my retrospective of 2005s. This is clearly a great terroir, and that comes through in this savory, broad, expansive, pure 2005 Proprietary Red from Sloan. Offering black raspberry and blackcurrant fruit, silky tannins, notes of forest floor and spice box, and loamy soil undertones, the wine is dense, full-bodied, opulent, and just entering its plateau of maturity, where it should keep for another 15-20 years. This was one of the stunners in the great line-up that I tasted of 10-year-old North Coast Cabernet Sauvignons.

Very dark with berry, lead pencil, pepper but lacking body and finish. Faded by next day.

Location alone is enough to draw attention to this wine - the vineyards are perched upon a picturesque hill above the renowned Auberge du Soleil - but the added value of having David Abreu plant the vineyards and Mark Aubert as the founding winemaker ties it all together into a package destined for stardom. The inaugural vintage, 2000, came out in 2004, with huge concentration, brilliant fruit integrity and a rich, complex character. The incredible structure of the Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend comes from the balanced integration of the exquisite 100% Rutherford estate fruit and the obsessive attention to detail in the vineyard and cellar. Martha McClellan is current winemaker, under whose guidance Sloan continues in the young tradition that earned it a 100-point score from Robert Parker for the 2002 vintage.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
