    As for the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon RBS, this is Clone 337, and came in at 14.5% alcohol. It is a relatively small cuvee of only 125 cases. This wine exhibits notes of underbrush, forest floor, fresh black and red currants, spicy oak, density, richness, and a supple and velvety texture. This seems to be the most evolved and precocious of the five cuvees, and probably will be the one that most consumers will prefer drinking today. However, don't discount its aging potential, as it certainly has two decades left in it.

    Good deep ruby. Vibrant aromas of crushed blackberry, bitter chocolate and violet. Quite suave on entry, then chewy and juicy in the middle, with strong acidity giving the wine sharp definition. Less obviously sweet than the 2004; in fact, this is distinctly firmer in texture and evolving slowly. Finishes with a note of dark chocolate. This will be entirely from Clone 337, which needs long hang time on the vines.

    Young and vibrant, with tight, zesty layers of wild berry, currant, hazelnut and nutmeg scents that are firm and compact. Finishes with a rich, plush texture. Has great complexity and depth. 125 cases made.

    Dark purple. Decanted for about one hour. Great wine. Should have been had before the Blankiet 2003 Cab. More perfumed than fruity. Flower scents mingled with dark berries. Light espresso and cocoa. Medium bodied

Schrader's mission statement is essentially one where their 30-year leases on vineyard parcels give them the ability to present a specific clonal study of Cabernet Sauvignon from three highly desired clones (4, 6, and 337) grown within a single vineyard. The bottom line is that with their production averages about 1,600 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, the wines do have subtle differences, but most importantly, all of them are extraordinary in quality - among the finest Cabernets in California. Fred Schrader and his wife, Carol, hired Thomas Brown to make these wines.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
